Get into the Swing

Dance Camp Lugano

10 - 12 June 2022

CENTRO ESPOSIZIONI, Via Campo Marzio, Lugano (Switzerland).

The Summer Jamboree on the Lake Dance Camp provides a full immersion into the world of Swing and Rock’n’Roll dancing.

Three jam-packed days to learn the basics or take your dancing to the next level together with some of the best dancers on the international Swing and Rock’n’Roll scene

And all in the picturesque town and lovely lakeside of Lugano.

Who is it for

Dance Camp is for all dancers of all levels, from those who have never taken a triple-step in their life, to those who are always the first and last on the dance floor, or already have plenty of experience, there is something for everyone.

Lessons are divided into three levels:

Dance styles

At the Summer Jamboree on the Lake Dance Camp you can learn to cut a rug in a variety of dance styles.

In particular, there are lessons in Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag and Solo Jazz.

boogie wooglie
lindy hop
balboa
collegiate shag
solo jazz

Boogie Woogie describes a lively style of jazz music that really came into its own in the 1920s. The dance we know today came along a little later and was inspired by the Swing dances of the 40s and 50s. It is a fun and happy partner dance that is quite structured, but not choreographed. It is often danced to up-tempo rock’n’roll or rhythm’n’blues rhythms, although can also be danced to slower tempos.

Lindy Hop is a partnered Swing dance that was born in Harlem in the late 1920s and is synonymous with the Swing era and dance halls (and indeed street corners!) of the 1930s & 1940s. After its revival in the 1980s and 1990s its popularity has exploded worldwide, and over the years it has developed many different styles. It is danced to many styles of music, not just jazz, and is very social and improvisational in nature.

Balboa is a partnered Swing dance that dates back to the 20s, 30s and 40s, and evolved as a reaction to the crowded dance floors of the day. It is often danced to faster swing and jazz rhythms, and so the footwork tends to be smaller and smoother, and the embrace between partners much closer than the other swing dances.

Collegiate Shag is a high energy partner dance originating from the 1920s and 1930s and is experiencing a huge revival on the Swing scene today. It is danced to many styles of music from jazz and swing to western swing and even rock’n’roll, and often to fast tempos! It shares rhythm patterns with other swing dances, however the footwork and the hold is quite different.

Solo Jazz refers to free or improvised dance to jazz music, without a partner. Combining traditional jazz steps and routines from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, you can play with rhythm patterns, syncopation, musicality, improvisation and interpretation. Solo Jazz can also help improve your understanding of rhythm and musicality and add styling to your partner dancing.

Frequently asked questions

The Summer Jamboree on the Lake Dance Camp will take place from Friday 10 June to Sunday 12 June 2022 in Lugano, Switzerland.

The Summer Jamboree on the Lake Dance Camp will take place at Centro Esposizioni – Via Campo Marzio, Lugano.

Each day we have a programme of 15 lessons, split over 3 spacious rooms, featuring lessons of different styles and fit for every level of dancer from some of the best international teachers on the scene. Dances include Boogie Woogie, Lindy Hop, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, and Solo Jazz.

The courses are different every day, and so are the teachers, so for example, two beginner Boogie Woogie classes are unlikely to be exactly the same, even if taught by the same teachers. They will be pitched at the same level, but could vary in style, technique, content and of course teaching methods!

Also, the courses aren’t progressive, so if you join us on Sunday and want to take beginners classes, you won’t be left behind.

No! With a day ticket, you are free to choose up to 5 lessons a day. You don’t have to decide which lessons in advance, you can choose (and change your mind!) on the day, and you are free to choose classes that include a range of different styles and levels, according to your interests and abilities.

Roughly speaking, Level 1 is for beginners. That is to say, people who haven’t danced before, or people that haven’t been dancing for very long, or who aren’t that confident with the basics yet.

Level 2 is for improvers. People who have been dancing for a little while, have a good grasp of the basics, and are ready to build on their skills and expand their repertoire.

Level 3 is for more experienced dancers. The material will be challenging and diverse, and you will need to be confident with the basics of the dance, have a sound understanding of rhythm, and a good technical ability.

As we don’t audition and assign levels to those who register, we ask you to please respect the level guide above when choosing your classes, out of respect for the teachers and your fellow students, and of course to get the most of the classes yourself.

No, it is not obligatory to book as a couple. During the classes, partners are rotated, so you will get to meet and dance with a variety of people. However, if you are booking without a partner, it is always a good idea to register your interest early, as in some cases we have a waiting list for single dancers.

We monitor the balance of leads and follows registered each day carefully, to try to ensure the best possible experience during the workshops. As we leave you free to choose your classes during the day, there is always a chance that more leads or follows may be present in any one single workshop, however for the total number of registrations each day, we work hard to ensure that the number of leads and follows is well balanced.

Lessons at the Summer Jamboree Dance Camp will be conducted in English. We are very proud of the calibre of our teachers that have a wealth of experience and expertise in teaching around the world, and are able to communicate ideas and instructions with success, using a variety of methods that transcend lingual barriers.

Dance Camp and Boot Camp offer two different learning experiences with the highest calibre of international teachers.

Dance Camp offers a rich selection of classes in varying styles and levels, so whichever day(s) you choose, and regardless of your level of experience, there is something for you! No two classes are the same, and the classes throughout the day are not progressive, so you can mix and match your classes to suit your abilities and interests.

Boot Camp is aimed specifically at beginners with the intention of preparing new dancers (or indeed anyone that would like to refresh and brush up their basics) for the dance floor in a short period of time. It is more than a taster class, it is an intensive course of study that offers the opportunity to learn a lot and make rapid improvements, whilst having a lot of fun of course!

1 Day 70 Euro
2 Day 135 Euro
3 Day 190 Euro

Yes! During the Summer Jamboree on the Lake Dance Camp it will also be possible to do single lessons by going directly to the class you would like to take and paying on the door.

As it is very important to us to keep the classes well balanced, we cannot guarantee entrance to single leads or follows, however if numbers allow, you are most welcome.

On the door tickets cost 25 CHF per person.

ADVANCED BOOKING IS NOT POSSIBLE

For all of the classes, we recommend that you wear comfortable and supportive shoes, without too much grip. For Balboa, some follows prefer a shoe with a small heel, however it is not a requirement.

For the classes we recommend that you wear light and comfortable clothes. You might also want to consider bringing a change and a towel with you, it’s possible you might work up a sweat!

The classes are all under one roof! So there is plenty of time to move from one class to another without breaking a sweat.

All COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted in Switzerland for some time, and as such the Summer Jamboree on the Lake Dance Camp is not subject to any restrictions.

It is not possible for children under the age of 16 to register at the Summer Jamboree Dance Camp.
